An insight into Wotton + Kearney Solicitor Martin Benson.
How did you become involved in the insurance industry?
My father was an executive with an insurance company and used to tell me about his dealings with lawyers on a number of high profile and complex matters. Because of this I developed an interest in law and naturally gravitated towards insurance law. When I started my career I trained under an iconic figure in the London market. I also have a brother who is a D&O underwriter so I suppose you could say it is in our blood.
What has been your career highlight so far?
I worked in New York on a jewellers' block case which involved preparing the evidence to rebut a claim which was being brought by a Manhattan jeweller. The claim related to an alleged burglary at their premises. I met and interviewed a wide variety of colourful characters and learnt a lot about safe-cracking as well!
What do you enjoy doing outside the office?
I enjoy spending time with my family. I have two young boys Ollie and Freddie, who I spend most of my spare time with. Our staffi Milli demands a walk every morning which can be a pleasant way to start the day. I am also an avid golfer and a member of Long Reef Golf Club. I try to get to the course for a hit with mates on the weekend. With what little time I have left I like to play one of my three guitars.
