An insight into Wotton + Kearney Solicitor Antonia Gleeson.
Where did your interest in insurance law come from?
My interest in insurance law arose from my tertiary studies (I have a
combined business/law degree). Working at a specialist law firm
involves me in various areas of insurance law including professional
indemnity, D&O, product liability, industrial special risk and trade
practices. These areas cover a broad range of complex and interesting
disputes and effectively combine both my commercial and legal interests.
What do you think is a key, current legal issue?
The High Court's decision in M70/2011 v Minister for Immigration and Citizenship & Anor to
grant a permanent injunction against the Australian Government
transferring certain detained asylum seekers to Malaysia is an important
current legal issue. Not only is the subject matter of the decision of
great significance (i.e. migration law, human rights and the interaction
between domestic and international law), the decision has also
enlivened much debate about the interpretation and application of
legislation by government Ministers, the role of precedent, judicial
activism and the Court's ability to challenge and check the executive
power of government.
How do you spend your time away from the office?
Catching
up with friends, trying out new restaurants and bars and enjoying
Sydney's beautiful beaches. I am also studying Italian on the weekends
as I love the Italian language and culture.
