Matthew joined Wotton + Kearney in 2008 as Special Counsel. He is a former insurance partner of Ebsworth and Ebsworth having served six years with that firm before joining Wotton + Kearney.
Matthew has 16 years' experience providing legal services to the global insurance and reinsurance industry. He is admitted to practice in both New York and New South Wales.
Prior to coming to Australia in 2001, Matthew was a partner at Mendes & Mount LLP in New York, a specialist insurance and reinsurance law firm, where he regularly acted for London Market insurers in complex coverage disputes in the United States.
Matthew's recent matters include:
- acting for an insurer in coverage dispute against a reinsurer;
- advising an insurer in relation to professional indemnity and D&O policy drafting issues;
- acting for a life insurer in litigation against it by a former sales agent for unconscionable termination of the agency;
- acting for a reinsurance broker in commercial litigation;
- acting for an insurance broker in relation to various errors and omissions claims; and
- acting for various solicitors in relation to professional indemnity claims against them.
Matthew is also a frequent lecturer on insurance law. In this regard he is one of the developers and regular presenters of the 'Insurance Essentials' course run by Chartered Secretaries Australia. He has also presented a number of seminars on insurance law for the College of Law.
Memberships
Since his arrival in Australia, Matthew has continued his commitment to servicing the needs of the insurance and reinsurance community. He is an active member of the Wotton + Kearney Reinsurance Focus Group and the Financial Lines Focus Group. He is also a member of ANZIIF.
