Robert has over thirteen years experience, including four years with Allens Arthur Robinson in Sydney and another four years with Clyde & Co in London. He holds Bachelor of Laws, Bachelor of Economics, and a Master of Laws degrees. He has extensive experience in acting for reinsurers, insurers and large corporate insureds in all of the above areas.
In 2005 Robert completed a Masters degree at the London School of Economics and Political Science where he was awarded the One Essex Court Prize for the best performance in Financial Law. His dissertation investigated the implications of finite risk transfer products for insurance law and financial regulation.
Robert's recent matters include:
- advising ISR Insurers on issues arising from the Varanus Island gas explosion off Western Australia;
- acting for parties in a major ASIC investigation;
- acting for professional indemnity insurers in a dispute over the construction of a major toll road in the Philippines;
- advising a bank on reinsurance arrangements for its offshore captive insurers;
- advising on D&O issues arising from a high profile takeover bid;
- advising many insurers and insureds on D&O policy wordings;
- drafting facultative and treaty reinsurance wordings;
- advising insurers on recent reforms to the insurance prudential regulation framework; and
- acting for the former directors of a major hedge fund now in liquidation in relation to a number of claims before the NSW Supreme Court.
Robert also has a wealth of experience accumulated in the UK. Matters in which he acted include the following reported cases:
- If P&C Insurance Limited (Publ) v Sliversea Cruises Limited & Ors (The Silver Cloud) [2004] Lloyd's Rep IR 696; [2004] Lloyd's Rep IR 217: acting for insurers in proceedings before Commercial Court and Court of Appeal, successfully defending a large claim by a US luxury cruise line for loss of income as a result of September 11 and the War on Terror;
- Sphere Drake Insurance Limited v Euro International Underwriting Limited & Ors [2003] Lloyd's Rep IR 525: acting for Sphere Drake in a major fraud action against its former underwriting agents EIU and brokers Stirling Cooke Brown, and in related arbitrations concerning its exposure to losses emanating from the 1990s Personal Accident LMX spiral; and
- Bonner & Ors v Cox & Ors [2004] Lloyd's Rep IR 569: acting for successful claimants in a dispute before the Commercial Court over common account reinsurance for participating syndicates in the Aon 77 Energy Cover.
