Martin joined Wotton + Kearney in January 2010 as a Consultant.  Prior to that he held senior legal positions with a major financial institution and with the company retained by the Liquidators and Scheme Administrators of the HIH Group of Companies to assist in the winding up of the HIH Estate.

Martin has extensive experience in providing legal services to the international insurance and reinsurance industry both in private practice and as an in house legal counsel (he is a member of ACLA).  He is admitted to practise in New South Wales and England and Wales.

Prior to arriving in Australia in 2001, Martin was a partner with a London firm where he specialised in insurance and reinsurance.  He was also seconded to a New York law firm for a period of time.  He is also a qualified company secretary and a member of the CSA.

Matters that Martin has worked on include:


  • advising an insurance broker in commercial litigation
  • acting for a major reinsurer in an action brought pursuant to a reinsurance to close contract involving the pursuit of a number of non-paying Lloyd's Names
  • drafting an after the event insurance policy for a Lloyd's broker
    preparing a report for a major reinsurer regarding the aggregation issues resulting from the pensions misselling affair
  • acting for Lloyd's syndicates in connection with various substantial building claims involving heave/subsidence and related third party recoveries
  • preparing a review of the claims handling operation of an insolvent insurance company specialising in construction risks
  • acting for a surety in defence of a substantial claim pursuant to a performance bond and the related third party claim pursuant to a counter-indemnity
  • representing a civil engineering contractor in connection with a substantial loss and expense claim following the inadequate performance of a road paving machine
  • preparation of various confidentiality, standstill and commutation agreements
