Ron Shorter Memorial Award

Wotton + Kearney solicitor Melissa Tan has been selected as one of 20 young professionals from the insurance industry to participate in Stage 2 of the Ron Shorter Memorial Award.

Ron Shorter was the Practice Manager at Colin Biggers & Paisley and widely acknowledged as a luminary of the insurance industry. It was his vision that a competition be introduced that would assist young professionals with their public speaking skills.

After Ron’s untimely passing in 2012, the NSW chapter of the Australian Insurance Law Association (AILA), together with the sponsorship of Colin Biggers & Paisley, set out to accomplish his vision. The Award was hosted by AILA NSW for the first time in 2012 and was an overwhelming success.

For Stage 1 all entrants were required to prepare and submit a 250 word summary of why they would benefit from improving their public speaking skills. They also had to nominate a topic on which they would present if selected for Stage 2.

Stage 2 will be held on 1 May and will involve a workshop on professional speaking after which each entrant will be asked to deliver a 2 – 3 minute presentation on the topic identified in Stage 1. Three participants will then be chosen for a second coaching session in preparation for a 20 minute presentation to approximately 80-100 peers from the insurance industry on 28 May. The presentation will be judged by a panel of industry professionals.

Congratulations to Melissa on this fantastic achievement and best of luck for Stage 2!
