James focuses on property, energy, construction and infrastructure risks across the transport and infrastructure, engineering and construction, and power generation and distribution sectors. His experience includes international arbitrations under ICC and SIAC Rules.

James acts for insurers and reinsurers in matters ranging from complex coverage claims to the defence of litigated claims. He is also experienced in pursuing high-value subrogated recovery actions.

He has acted on disputes in London and across Asia Pacific.

  • Advising insurers subscribing to a contract works and material damage policy on several claims arising from the design and construction of a motorway.
  • Advising contract works insurers on various LNG coverage issues, including alleged fatigue damage to LNG pipelines and paint defects, considering in particular the damage versus defect debate and application of LEG exclusions.
  • Advising insurers on policy coverage issues arising out of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Advising (re)insurers in respect of insurance-related sanctions and coverage issues / loss of aircraft arising out of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
  • Advising (re)insurers on several large machinery breakdown and loss of profits claims at operational power plants across Asia and the Middle East.
